How to play Gloom MODs using ZGloom

ZGloom is a source port for current systems (Windows, Linux, ...etc) coded by Swizpig.
We can see not only it is hi-res & fast but also it has more advantages that original Amiga version doesn't have.
 • Amiga version of Gloom Deluxe was hi-res, however, there are fewer colors than classic Gloom (low-res).
Do you remember Gloom Deluxe couldn't show pink, purple and other colors? ZGloom does!
 • No limits of number of bodies' pieces on the floor. Amiga version has a limit.
 • Ingame music can be added (by yourself).
 • There's possibility we can create new mods that have more features.
So I think it recommends you to play ZGloom even if you'd played the game on your Amiga.

How to install ZGloom (Windows version) and play Gloom MODs:

1. Download  ZGloom from github.com.
2. Unzip it.
3. Download DATA from this website.
4. Unzip and copy it to the same folder that ZGloom exists. (See fig. 1).
5. Doubleclick ZGloom.exe . The game would be loaded automatically.

Of course you can also download the latest version of ZGloom.exe and replace it.

Make sure that the program needs the VS2013 runtime (MSVCR120.dll).
It can be download from microsoft.com (External link: Then click "Redistributable and Build tools" first.).
64bit Windows users must download & install both x86 version and x64 version ("vcredist_x86" & "vcredist_x64").

If your Windows system is very old and cannot install 2013 version,
you must install previous versions first. See whether your system has 2010 and 2012 version.
Press "Windows" key + "R" key. Then type "certmgr.msc". Search for "Microsoft Root Certificate Authority 2010 (2012)".
If you have to install previous versions, older version should be installed first.
(e.g.  If your system is 32bit Vista, try "vcredist_x86.exe"(2010 version) , then try "vcredist_x86.exe"(2012 version),
 and finally try "vcredist_x86.exe"(2013 version)).

Tested on Windows Vista (It plays music faster, though.), Windows 8 and Windows 11. Unfortunately it seems not to work on Windows XP.

The First Age MODs' pack

Fixed: pics/title&title.pal, misc/script and maps/map1_0
"The ONE demo"(map1_0) was special format. For example, player and player2
wasn't placed as event #1. So I fixed.
( Don't use this map1_0 when you want to play the game on your Amiga. )
Added a demo map for "Amiga Power issue Aug 1995".
Tested using ZGloom April 26 version:
All levels have been tested, there were no problems.

Gloom 3: Zombie Edition
Fixed misc/script. Renamed txts/floor10&roof10 to floora&roofa.
Renamed txts/floor11&roof11 to floorb&roofb.
It's because ZGloom loads the 2nd digits if a number of floor/roof is comprised of
two digits. (e.g.  ZGloom loads floor1&roof1 when it should load floor10&roof10.)
Episode 6 uses tile11, and episode 7 uses tile10.
Tested using ZGloom April 19 version:
All levels have been tested, there were no problems.

Zombie Massacre "Gloom4"
Fixed stuf/stages. Renamed txts/floor12&roof12 to floor1&roof1.
Renamed txts/floor13&roof13 to floor2&roof2.
It's because we need to make ZGloom load correct tiles (See above).
Tested using ZGloom ver 0.2.0:
All levels have been tested, there were no problems.
**Sorry! File name was wrong ("Gloom4-for-ZGloom.zip"). Now corrected!**

Czeslaw's maps pack
Fixed pics/title&title.pal and misc/script . Added maps/restroom.
Replaced pics/dmTitle&dmTitle.pal for later Death Mask ADF version's ones.
Edited each tile number (txts/floor&roof) for using as combat mode
(First series: Death Mask, Second series: Portal, Third series: City of Death).
Tested using ZGloom April 19 version:
All levels have been tested, there were no problems.

Jecht Battle
Fixed: pics/title&title.pal and misc/script
Tested using ZGloom April 19 version:
All levels have been tested, there were no problems.

8bit killer
Tested using ZGloom ver 0.2.0:
Palette of color of the picture before the 1st level corrupts only when the first loading.
Anything else, there were no problems. ( All levels have been tested. )

Death Mask 3D
(ADF version)
Replaced pics/Deathmask&Deathmask.pal for previous maps pack's ones.
Replaced pics/TheEnd&TheEnd.pal for previous maps pack's ones.
It is because ZGloom corrupts pallet of color of ADF's ones.
Tested using ZGloom ver 0.2.0:
All levels have been tested, there were no problems.

Did IT come from the desert?
(It's called DICFTD in short.)
Fixed: pics/title&title.pal and misc/script
Tested using ZGloom ver 0.2.0:
There were "almost" no problems, however, ZGloom might crash when it shows
several transparent walls at once. My apologies, this mod (by me) consists of
many transparent walls!  ...And, flame textures in E4L2 don't animate.

earok's example levels pack
Original sfxs/door is incompatible with ZGloom.
So I temporarily replaced that file for Gloom3's one. Misc/gun.bin was also fixed.
Tested using ZGloom ver 0.2.0:
All levels have been tested, there were no problems.

Enjoy them!
